Focal Points Focal points are a unique opportunity to experiment on a small scale and achieve an early success. As in many suburban neighborhoods, every home in mine has an identical white timber mail box post. I planted a group of three Scentimentals with some Henryi clematis, white begonias and oriental lilies around mine. Within a year my non-gardening weekend warrior neighborhood buddies were ripping up Bermudas grass in 100 degree weather and building mail box gardens, some with landscape roses and clematis. While I certainly do not advocate copying your neighbor's ideas it shows how easy it is to do a small mixed garden. Buoyed with success on a small scale and highly visible projects they are now ready for larger and more complex undertakings. Starting with low maintenance landscape shrubs like Knock Out rather than hybrids teas opened the world of roses to people who had previously considered them to be too much trouble.
