DESIGN TIPS
FOR MIXED SUBURBAN ROSE GARDENS Steven F. Fenner Introduction Whether faced with the initial landscaping for a new
home or the simple wish to enhance an existing yard, the design of new
gardens can be an intimidating challenge to an average suburban
homeowner. Many dream of
gardens woven in a beautiful tapestry of colors and textures with
continuously evolving displays of progressive bloom sequences with roses
in all their colors, fragrances and growth habits playing an important
role in the overall composition. While there are many fine texts on garden design and
rose culture they often focus on estate sized lots with formal geometric
beds dedicated solely to roses. This
information is not always easily translated to the scale and proportion
of the suburban yard. Further,
smaller yards often require that the same space be used to accommodate
all the plants the gardener wants to grow.
The following design tips are presented to help with landscaping
planning for modest sized yards with mixed gardens and a heavy emphasis
on roses. |
